Anyone know much about how DYN DNS (Dynamic DNS) works ?

The only thing I can think of is when the host that wants to update its IP it sends
the info to the provider of the service (i.e., the DYN NS -- dynamic name server).

Im gonna look this up but I'm interested in what others have to say...
What do you all think of it ? Useless or Useful ?
heh...

Metty,

I haven't Setup nor Admin'd a Dynamic DNS server, but I did look into it a bit. There are a lot of companies offering this service to anybody for free. As far as Admining it, there's software for it, and appliances built with it like: http://www.infoblox.com/

I'll keep looking at it to see what it is all about. I do know this: I can have a DNS server running FBSD, Locked down and in production in under 30 minutes from scratch...gotta love that!

Dynamic DNS makes poop. If you plan on using it get an appliance and be vewy vewy careful.

Metty,

I noticed a lot of ports for Dynamic DNS in the ports collection for FreeBSD 4.5. Just some FYI for ya!
