Hey,

Just a thought here.. not sure if this is 100% true.

My guess is that whois checks a certain string, and tries to find the appropriate name server (the last bit is true) to query.

These domains (except for those ending in microsoft.com) are not owned by Microsoft, but other people.. and they just made a vhost or so, that has microsoft.com in it.

Would imagine someone here could confirm this, but I'm very much out of the loop as far as dns is concerned these days.
