Once you've got a server and client.. you can use it on any network... Security configurations considered..
just telnet to IP and port if it is on same network .. check what the IP is of the server your telneting too.. if you don't know then perhaps use a tool like Nmap to discover up hosts on your network... then you can do a bit of port surfing to discover services and find which one has the correct port open. etc etc etc..
